RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate - Interactive Training

This is the interactive version of the SRC course, the training element for which can be undertaken in your own time, with just the assessment being carried out at our Bradwell centre.

This course will give the knowledge and skills required to understand the correct procedures when operating a marine radio. A marine radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures.

Course at a glance

  • Suitable for - Anyone who owns or will be using a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio.
  • Minimum age - 16
  • Location - Remote
  • Duration - Up to approx 6-8 hours self paced study time. Instructional support will be provided for a period of one year from the date of your enrollement on the course. After this time your user account will be removed from the RYA Interactive site. 
  • Price - £85 (online training course only, additional fee for examination to be paid directly to the RYA)
  • Additional - Please note, following completion of the online training and knowledge check candidates must attend an in person examination in order to be issued with an SRC licence. The exam usually takes 1-2 hours and takes place at Essex Outdoors Bradwell RYA Training Centre. To arrange an exam please contact the centre once you have completed the training course and knowledge check. 

Please note, you need to select a date from the calendar to make your booking however you do not have to complete the training on this date - you may complete this training at your leisure!

Once you have booked the RYA Interactive SRC Course we will aim to enrol and send you login details within 24hrs (Monday - Thursday. Friday, weekend and bank holiday bookings will be enrolled during the next working day). We will also post a copy of the RYA VHF Handbook (G13). Once you have received these you will be able to complete the SRC training in your own time.

Course detail

This is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. 
This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.

The online course consist of 7 modules;

  • Basics of radio operation
  • Frequencies and channels
  • Distress procedures
  • Emergency and medical assistance
  • Ship-to-shore telephone calls
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
  • GMDSS and associated equipment

Once you have completed the modules the pre-exam knowledge check will become available to you. 

Course Outcomes

Once you have sucessfully completed the online training and knowledge check you will be eligible to undertake the examination which should be arranged directly with the Bradwell Centre by phoneing 01621 776256 or emailing bradwell@essexoutdoors.com 

Prior to attending the exam you will need to register your details with the RYA and make the examination fee payment of £76. Once you have done this you will be provided with a uniquely numbered and prepopulated appliction form which you will need ot bring with you to the examination as proof of payment.

The online Marine Radio SRC course is a web-based course for your PC, Mac or tablet. Before purchasing the course from us, we advise you to check the compatibility information below.
