RYA Dinghy Instructor Pre-Entry Assessment
This one day sailing assessment is an entry requirement for the RYA Dinghy Instructor programme.
The pre-entry assessment is used to confirm candidates can sail in a controlled and confident manner, showing consideration for preparation, communication, approach and execution at all times.
During the assessment day the candidates will be supported by our qualified expert staff and may be asked to demonstrate some or all of the below skills:
- Sail around a triangular course of 100m (minimum) legs using all the boat's normal equipment
- Sail a tight circular course around a stationary boat
- Sail a follow my leader course behind another boat
- Pick up a man overboard dummy
- Sail without a rudder, or with the tiller on a loose elastic around a triangular course (if appropriate)
- Lee shore landing and departure (if appropriate)
- Anchor or pick up a mooring wind against tide (if appropriate)
- Come along-side a moored boat wind against tide (if appropriate)
Successfully passing this assessment is an entry requirement of the RYA Dinghy Instructor course.
Minimum age 16
*Candidates that progress onto the Dinghy Instructor training and assessment course will be required to hold an RYA accepted First Aid certificate, an RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding certificate and an RYA Powerboat Level 2 (with coastal endorsement), certificate. The Pre-Entry assessment must be completed within (and not exceeding), a 12 month period prior to undertaking a Dinghy Instructor course.
